Someone is stealing Wagner, in miniature, again

Two hundred and ten sculptures of the composer vanished as Bayreuth marked 270 years since his birth. In 2024 it was 115. This is no longer a prank. It is a collection.

BAYREUTH — Two hundred and ten miniature sculptures of Richard Wagner have been stolen in the year the town is marking 270 years since his birth, El País reported. In 2024, 115 disappeared during the festival. At some point a crime reporter has to stop calling this a curiosity and start calling it a serial theft with a taste for leitmotif.

Wagner is already a problem in the German public square — genius, poison, and Bayreuth as a shrine that cannot quite decide how much of the man to keep. Stealing his statuettes is either a political gesture, a collector’s compulsion, or a very patient joke. The police will prefer a suspect. Culture will prefer a theory. We will wait for the suspect.
